Chapter Five

Jaylen’s heartbeat hammered so hard he couldn’t hear his own panting breaths. He was barely dragging in enough oxygen to keep from passing out. Maybe not enough. He was certain he was seeing spots at the edge of his vision.

Especially because the thing rolling out of the furnace… Just. Kept. Coming.

Whatever it was, it was long. And huge. Thick. Dark. Even in the bright basement lighting with the lack of shadows, he couldn’t get a good look at the thing. But it looked like a giant snake. A huge snake. Bigger than anything he’d ever even heard of or seen nature documentaries on.

And it was sliding out of his furnace!

No head yet. It seemed to be coiling around the outside of the furnace boxes, growing thicker as it went, but he couldn’t seem to see the head. It was lost in the slide of that huge snake-like body of darkness. There were scales. He saw those now. Everything was black though. So he only knew there were scales because some of them shimmered with a little golden purple reflection.

The furnace disappeared beneath the sliding body, the fixtures and piping pulled and tugged out of place, away from the walls. And still more of it seemed to continue wrapping around, scales sliding over scales. The noise was nails-on-chalkboard horrible, setting his teeth on edge. His scalp tingled. His base, self-preservation instincts screamed at him to run.

This was the part of the horror movie where the Too Stupid To Live character had already done the dumb thing and gone into the basement. They see the serial killer with the hatchet walking toward them. And instead of scrambling up the stairs like a normal person, they stand on the stairs, waiting for the slowly approaching serial killer while they just scream. Like that would help anyone.

To be fair, he wasn’t screaming. Well, he was in his head. But no sound seemed to come out of his mouth. He only knew he was breathing because that was coming in pants that couldn’t seem to drag in enough air, and he really was worried he’d pass out soon.

The creature beneath him on the stairs stared at the writhing mass of black scales wrapping around the furnace in frozen silence, too. It took a few moments, but when Jaylen realized the creature wasn’t doing anything, he finally dragged his gaze away from the ginormous snake obscuring his furnace to stare at the creature.

It was transfixed. One claw tipped hand on the banister below Jaylen. One foot on the bottom step. But its entire attention was on the furnace and the snake thing. From higher on the staircase, Jaylen couldn’t see the creature’s expression. But it looked to be trembling.

What Jaylen wanted to say was, “We need to get the hell out of here and call animal control because that snake is big enough to eat you and me both.”

What he did say was, “Hunnah hm go na.”

Which probably didn’t translate quite right.

The creature didn’t budge.
